This story is about a woman MAMZELEL AURELLE who even at the age of 50 years is single. She has never been in love or never got married this clearly shows that she has never experienced an emotional connection through any relation. She only had her dog named Ponto and workers who are Negros. Her dog named Ponto and her workers who are negroes. This basically shows that she is all alone. One day her neighbour went to visit her mom leaving her four children who had never experienced handling a kid. At first she complained to her aunt who was her cook. And this clearly shows that she didn’t gladly welcome those kids. This was in the beginning but gradually she developed love for those kids which she herself has not realised .But she felt lonely only when her mother came back to take her kids and at that time she cried out loud without realising that her pet dog was already licking her hand.
THEMES :
Emptiness – It was first time in her life after the departure of the kids from her house which made her empty from inside. This realisation happened only when she got connected with those kids who are symbol of innocence. With them she for the first time realised the essence of loving someone That’s why when they left she couldn’t control herself .She even became ignorant towards her dog who kept on licking her hand.
REGRET – The title itself is quiet justifiable in stating the mind of the writer in the end when she finally realised the emotional connection in the form of loving someone and regretted a lot in end. she now realised that how lonely she is in this world.
LITERARY DEVICE
Symbolism – Children can be considered as symbolism in this story .They actually made her realised how lonely she is for which she regretted at the end Iit was through the children that she for the first time realised the bond of loving someone. She is all alone again after the departure of those four kids with her mother.
